Tell us about your family business (What you do, how you started, who’s involved etc)
The Yorkshire Wagyu Company started trading in 2014 after Yorkshire Wold’s farmers Jim Bloom and Jonathan Shepherd spent two years establishing one of the biggest Wagyu cross and Wagyu full blood herds in the UK.
Jonathan Shepherd is the Managing Director and is passionate about all things Wagyu. His wife, Juli, manages the cattle passports and the busy farm office and keeps the team in order with home-made cakes and just a little bit of gentle nagging. Daughters Poppy and Daisy get involved when they’re not taking part in pony events.
What’s your proudest moment/biggest achievement as a family business?
Notable achievements in the three years since launch include many business and product awards, including a Great Taste Two Star award for our Minced Wagyu and Onion pie and the Yorkshire Life Food product of the year award, but the biggest achievement for our young business and our small team is a nationwide listing in prestigious retailer Whole Foods Market that takes effect next month.
What do you love about being a family business?
The best thing is working with like-minded people and being able to involve our daughters, 15-year-old Poppy and 11-year-old Daisy. They love to help with everything from office paperwork, to feeding calves, to attending shows and food festivals. We love the flexibility and being involved in every aspect of the business from paddock to palate. The Yorkshire Wagyu Company isn’t just a business to us, it’s a way of life and we’re proud of our small team of “Wagyu Warriors” who always go the extra mile to exceed expectations.
