In 2004 mum and I raised enough deposit to buy a dated salon in the heart of Llangefni, a Welsh community on the Isle of Anglesey. Together with Dad we renovated the old fashioned salon and changed its name to our address number, ONE.a. Mum isn’t a hairdresser but together we became the perfect business partners.I relocated with my two young daughters, and we embarked on a new life together on the Isle of Anglesey. Mum & Dad commuted from their home on Merseyside every Thursday to Sunday and spent all school holidays supporting the salon and helping with childcare.
I am confident in my profession after over 2 decades of hands-on experience. I consider myself to be a people’s person and still run a busy column in the salon as well as managing the business. I enjoy all aspects of hairdressing especially new fashion and hair techniques, I love what I do! My aim in 2004 was to build a good loyal customer base, to be the best and offer outstanding customer service to complement our high standard of hairdressing skills. Most importantly training and developing young people for their future careers.
Mum (Brenda) is not a hairdresser but always wanted to be when she was younger so she puts training at the forefront of our business strategy and is a natural mentor in the salon making all our team strive to be their best they could. I taught hairdressing skills and mum brought confidence and business skills, making everyone believe in themselves. Mum became everybody’s second mother! We believe our young person training program which we continue today has been the backbone of our business. Mum runs the admin side of the business, is in charge of the Salon reception and helped me immensely with my two young daughters during their school years.
Fast forward a few busy years & I am really happy that both my daughters have joined our family business. They both run busy columns developing a client base of their own. We are now 3 generations and the business goes from strength to strength! In 2011 we purchased a four floor run down building in Caernarfon town centre in North Wales and together transformed it into a new modern hairdressing and beauty salon. The salon is now the busiest and most popular in our area. We offer an even wider range of hairdressing and beauty services here.
The One a. team travel regularly to different national hair and beauty events and competitions. We’ve won quite a few trophies over the last few years. Being in and around the salons from a young age has had a positive effect on my daughters and now they are both working full time. Both are now fully qualified hairdressers.
Ellie, my eldest is 20yrs old. Ell enjoys all aspects of hairdressing and her specialist area is colouring, especially Balayage and hair contouring. Ellie competes regularly in hair and beauty competitions, winning many national and some international competitions striving to keep our salon at the forefront of our industry. Ellie continues to learn new techniques and is currently doing an advanced barbering course which is salon based with our local college, and then plans to begin her NVQ level four. Ellie won student of the year in 2015 at Coleg Menai and was invited to front a video & radio promotion for the college advertising the power of work based apprenticeships.
Chloe is 18 and has just qualified as an NVQ level 2 hairdresser. Chloe has always had a great passion for our industry with a very good understanding of clients needs and customer service from being in and around the salon from the tender age of 5. Chloe is also a fully qualified nail technician and is already running a busy column in both areas. Chloe is following in her sisters and my own footsteps, competing and winning many prestigious competition’s and recently winning a bridal competition in her college claiming 1st place against all the winners of the local colleges. Chloe is ready to start a more advanced hairdressing qualification, NVQ level 3 I re-married in 2009, and my husband and I bought Mum’s share of the business.
The Caernarfon salon is so busy I decided in December 2016 to let one of my team members rent Llangefni salon so we can concentrate on the bigger business. Mum still enjoy’s working in the salon and is invaluable to our family run business. In 2013 myself, my husband and now 4 children relocated with my parents to the beautiful Llyn Peninsula. My youngest daughter who is now 8, loves helping us in the salon! My step-son Hari who is now 15 also lends a hand when he can. Our clients love that we are a family run business and that we always go the extra mile to give them the best customer service and salon experience that is possible and, at all times supporting one and other.
What’s your proudest moment/biggest achievement as a family business?
In 2011 we opened the doors to our second salon. ONE.a Hair and Beauty Salon. A four-story building in the heart of Caernarfon, a busy town centre in North Wales. We bought it as a run down empty premises, old insurance brokers. It took 6 weeks to renovate it and in December 2011 we opened our shiny new 4-floor hair and beauty salon with 10 hair stations and 5 beauty rooms!! Due to a number of apprentices we had trained, we filled the building on a Friday and Saturday.
As learners progressed each year, we employed new learners and staff retention was high. Also, we like to offer work experience placements for school’s each year. We are extremely proud of how we have seen our apprentices careers develop, five of whom have gone on to open their own successful businesses! The competition is healthy, improves Caernarfon’s hair & beauty profile and brings new clients in from all over the county.
Another really proud moment is renting our first salon to one of our team members who started as a young apprentice with us at 15 years old. Hayley trained and worked hard over the past 9 years, renting our Llangefni Salon in December 2016. Renting to Hayley has allowed us more time to concentrate on our bigger business closer to our new home.
This is a life changing opportunity for Hayley and her young family, and I fully support and mentor Hayley when she needs me. She employed another one of my team members who was also my young apprentice from the day I started in 2004, and she is still there today 13 years on. Hayley is planning to buy the business from us next year and that will enable us to branch out again with my lovely family, closer to our home here on the stunning Llyn Peninsula in the very heart of North Wales.
We are also proud to support our local charities gifting hundreds of raffle prizes over the years to our local schools and other charities. More recently we held a Macmillan coffee morning throwing our doors open to the public and baking cakes to sell, raising £344.59 for the charity.
We also raised £4,775.05 for our local special educational needs school who needed to raise money to build a recreational area to segregate older children with difficulties ranging from mild to severe from the younger children. We transported our salon to the school for a day and sold our treatments there. We put on an amazing catwalk fashion show starring the school’s students and sold afternoon tea. The event gained local T.V and media coverage. The whole team at ONE.a were extremely proud of what we all had achieved and how much we raised.
One of or biggest achievements is winning the PRS for music £5k Salon Sound Makeover 2015 with expert sound consultation advice from Mr Steve Levine. Plus a launch party which we held in Caernarfon Castle with Britain’s Got Talent finalist, Côr Glanaethwy performing for us in an invite only Launch Party.
This competition offered salon owners and managers across the UK a chance to improve their sound and music facilities. Winning this competition was a shock, and the icing on the cake for ONE.a after all the hard work we had as a family, put into the renovations.
Winning this prestigious competition helped us immensely in creating the perfect customer experience at ONE.a throughout all the diverse treatment areas. Music is now streaming through all floors in the salon with a state of art music system. The staff room Streams upbeat on trend tracks thus keeping our team happy and super motivated.
What do you love about being a family business?
I get a buzz working with Mum and my daughters, and proud to see it all working well and securing a future for us all. I love the area to live and work, Caernarfon is quite spectacular and on Snowdonia’s doorstep! Providing a stable career for the girls is a major goal of mine and Mums.
