Tell us about your family business (What you do, how you started, who’s involved etc)
Mereway Ltd started in 1986 producing carcass units for independent retailers. Mereway were the first UK company to introduce colour coordinated units initially frowned upon by other manufacturers but today is the hallmark of a good quality kitchen. We have grown in products and services initially employing 5 people and now employ close to 300 with 3 generations having worked or work within the business including Chairman (now retired) Brothers Bob and Richard Norris Joint M.D, payroll, Sales, Marketing.

What’s your proudest moment/biggest achievement as a family business?
One of our proudest achievements is our staff retention and retained talented skills within our employees. We have over 50% of our workforce with over 10 years service. Of those, 28% have over 20 years service and 25% have over 15 years service. In addition, we also invested in a wood burner some 5 years ago and moved to become a sustainable manufacturer using waste wood to provide on-site heating for our large factory removing landfill but also qualifying for the 20-year government incentive scheme giving us a 60k-70k return per year over a 20-year scheme to reinvest.

What do you love about being a family business?
Being a family business allows the “personal touch” through innovation and new product ranges but also working with Co-Directors and a well established Management Team we retain our market place whilst extending our product range into different markets which not only include Kitchens but in 2005 established Mereway Bathrooms and in 2016 established a further product range in the Bedrooms market employing a further 30% but continuing to retain our valuable skills in a competitive marketplace.
