Tell us about your family business (What you do, how you started, who’s involved etc)
We are a true family business with my brother and myself both owning a 50% share, as well as my wife and son working in various capacities throughout the various arms of the business to support growth. It all began with our passion for retail; we owned and built up a number of local Nisa stores in Bedfordshire. Over the years we have won various accolades for our stores, company and people, success was down to investing in people, stores, technology and local communities. Over the years my retail standing led to my positions on the Board of Nisa, Skillsmart Retail and various other trade organisations. At our peak, we sold some of the stores and reinvested in local property and development. One such acquisition was a dilapidated pub and with self-belief in our business model and commercial acumen, coupled with our retail and sourcing experience, we decided to launch a new restaurant named Go Houghton. The restaurant celebrates its 2 year anniversary in May this year and has grown from strength to strength, bringing the community and its families together in Houghton Regis, recognised by the fact that it is rated as no. 4 in the country and has won multiple awards. While my brother looks after retail, wife manages the office functions and property while I manage the restaurant and development of the disruptive online platform.

What’s your proudest moment/biggest achievement as a family business?
The recognition we achieved with our Nisa stores was a pivotal moment for us as a family. We had all worked so hard as a family to achieve success and saw that benefit other local families and the wider community too. That elation is only now seconded by the fact that I am working closely with my son on our latest innovation. Knowing that my son will follow in the family footsteps and will one day take over the business and our legacy gives me the greatest feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment.

What do you love about being a family business?
Family is everything. Whilst business is often hard and exhausting, and even downright scary at times, you want your family around you for support and to celebrate when things go well. Knowing that my brother, wife and son are all in this together with me makes everything worthwhile, also being a family business we are close to our people and customers, we can make swift decisions, adapt and reshape to changing times.
