Tell us about your family business (What you do, how you started, who’s involved etc)
DCE was started by 2 brothers, David and Tony Cox back in 1990. They have built the business through an excellent reputation and by building trusted relationships. We design and build custom stands for exhibitions, but also for Conferences, retail environments and Duty-Free installations at airports. Over the last 27 years, we’ve expanded globally, but the core of the business is still based on “Family Values”. Grandad, David and Tony’s father, (and known as Grandad to everyone that works with us) is involved with the Electrical department.
Yvonne, (sister) is the Financial Director. Matt and John Cox (Sons of David and Tony) are Project Directors that uphold the brand out in the field, with their vast product knowledge and attention to detail.
What’s your proudest moment/biggest achievement as a family business?
There have been many times we’ve felt proud – receiving a great testimonial from a happy client is something we share across the whole team. Pete, our Managing Director, joined us in 2004 when we bought his family business. He has been instrumental in helping us elevate DCE dramatically and we are proud to have him on board.
Watching the organisation outgrow several premises over the last years, and reach such an impressive turnover through our collective team effort, is also something we are very proud of. Our values are strong, and our sons started down on the shop floor and progressed through the company as they developed their skills, to now be Directors in their own right. Opening our new London office last year was a statement to us, that we had ‘arrived’ and is probably the thing we are most proud of.
What do you love about being a family business?
Everyone that works for DCE experiences the warmth and open management style of the ‘Cox’ family. The foundation of the organisation is based on core family values and has developed through trust, loyalty, honesty and integrity. These values are respected by our clients who come back year on year.
As a global company, the Management team travel frequently. The pressure leading up to a job can mean there are sparring and banter in the office, but none of the family leaves the building for a long trip abroad, without a hug. We always go the extra mile for each other, supporting and doing whatever is required to help one another, whether day or night. Everyone is on the same page, all striving for success, working longer hours, rolling up their sleeves and the family culture and warmth that is extended down through the entire team is also reflected back upwards.
