Julianne took over Creative Nature from her father when she was 22. The management team employed by her father had led the company into over £56,000 losses, but within 18 months of taking over, with just 1 employee, Julianne pulled it back into profit. Now, the brand is stocked in ASDA, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, WHSmith, TKMax, Lloyds Pharmacy, Google HQ, high-end retailers and overseas. Julianne is the owner/CEO and her partner, who was also the first employee, is the Operations Manager.
What’s your proudest moment/biggest achievement as a family business?
Launching into Tesco in 2014 with just 2 people in the business was a game changer. After missing out on investment after launching a crowdfunding website with comments like ‘she’s just a little girl’, ‘they’re too young’ and ‘their targets are unrealistic’, the future of Creative Nature was in doubt, but 1 last throw of the dice paid off and Tesco took 2 lines to over 300 stores nationwide. In the same year, Creative Nature launched into Ocado and this lead to a growth of over 100% in 2014
What do you love about being a family business?
Being a family business means you have trust in those at the top. There is less fear that your management team will try and take you for a ride (what happened to my father). When ‘relaxing’ at home you are able to bounce ideas together about new products, where to take the business, what shows to attend.
