Tell us about your family business (What you do, how you started, who’s involved etc)
We’re a rapidly growing small business, led by a husband and wife team! At Centu, we build bespoke software and offer web and mobile app development. We’re ISO9001 (quality) and ISO 27001 (information security) accredited, as well as Cyber Essentials certified.

Centu was started in 2014 by James Inman. The company started off as a vehicle for his freelance work but in early 2016, James and his wife, Michelle, decided to take Centu full time!

Shortly after starting working full time in the business, James and Michelle secured serviced office space locally in Bury. Last summer, we hired our first members of staff! Now, we are a team of 6 and are holding interviews this week with a view to hiring number 7!

What’s your proudest moment/biggest achievement as a family business?
It’s been such an amazing year of firsts that it’s really hard to choose just one! Every milestone (getting our office space, getting our accreditations, growing our team, growing our turnover) has been a proud moment!

Our biggest achievements so far this year have been being shortlisted for The National Family Business Awards and being in a position to recruit our next team member and expand the team!

What do you love about being a family business?
When people realise that James and I are husband and wife, there comes the tentative question as to what it’s like working with each other! The answer is: we love it!

We make a really good balanced team – James has a background in technology, law and commercialisation and I have a background in facilities management, hospitality and marketing. We each add something to the other and in terms of the service Centu provides, it’s part of the reason why we stand out and why we’ve achieved much of our success so far.

One of our favourite things is that we don’t just work in our family business – we have built our own family business. We’re the first generation and we’d very much love to hand our business down to future generations; to leave a lasting legacy in our industry and within our family.
