Tell us about your family business (What you do, how you started, who’s involved etc)
Celtic & Co was founded 27 years ago by husband and wife team, Nick and Kath Whitworth. Their daughter Clare grew up alongside the business and now works in the marketing department. We started hand-crafting sheepskin boots in Cornwall and now offer a range of luxurious natural fibre clothing, outerwear and homewares.
What’s your proudest moment/biggest achievement as a family business?
Doing a deal with a private equity firm was the proudest moment for the husband and wife team. As a small business, it was a rare achievement, and for other people to recognise the potential that their firm had was amazing. It felt like a real turning point for the company, with new opportunities suddenly possible and within reach. They’d spent the previous years getting the business to meet a range of criteria for the deal to go through, however, it was also very important to them to ensure that the deal included certain terms so that the heritage of the brand and the people that worked for the company would be protected. Sheepskin boot and slipper production was stipulated to remain in Cornwall.
What do you love about being a family business?
The dedication of the workforce and their loyalty is incredible. A huge percentage of the workforce have been with us for many years, some of them even watching the Whitworth’s 2 children grow up through the hardest years, the business has faced and now come out the other side. Due to the size of the company, Nick and Kath personally know everyone, will check in regarding family members and at the end of the day, everyone is our family member.
