Birtley House Group Ltd
Tell us about your family business (What you do, how you started, who’s involved etc)
Founded in the 1920s by current owner’s grandfather, Dr Henry Lloyd Driver, and first registered as a nursing home in 1932. Moved to Birtley House in 1945. The business depends on three key elements: family ethos; innovation and dedication to ensuring a team ethic committed to maintaining the highest standards of care. We like our residents to feel they have moved home rather than moved into a Home. Currently rated by CQC as Outstanding (less than 1% of full nursing homes have this rating) and also awarded the top Platinum status by the Gold Standards Framework for end-of-life care (one of only 2 businesses to have both this and Outstanding). Currently, five members of the family work in the business but the family feel extends to encompass all 110 members of the team and the residents and their families too.
What’s your proudest moment/biggest achievement as a family business?
The recognition of our innovative work and achievement of Outstanding by Care England in choosing Birtley to represent innovation in the sector for an article in The Times Saturday Magazine in November 2016.
What do you love about being a family business?
The friendships forged throughout my life with families who keep coming back to Birtley across the generations.
