Tell us about your family business (What you do, how you started, who’s involved etc)
Leading Property Agents and Chartered Surveyors, Bettesworths, are a family-owned, independently operated company specialising in Commercial and Residential property and operate throughout the South West of England. The Torquay based company have been successfully valuing and selling commercial property across the South West since 1943, the year the business was founded by the late Bernard Bettesworth and his wife Maureen. The company has great strength in depth with a wide base of knowledge and experience. With 5 Chartered Surveyor Directors, 4 of whom are Bettesworths, the fifth being the highly respected Stephen Lofthouse, who was headhunted by the company over a decade ago. Behind the Board of Directors is a small, but dedicated, a proficient support team of experienced negotiators (all of whom have been with the company from trainee level) and administrative assistants.
The company is still very much a family business, with brothers Matt and Paul Bettesworth (both Chartered Surveyors) representing the third generation in leading the business forward. Growing from its roots in the hotel and leisure markets, Bettesworths is now a major regional player across a far broader spectrum of property fields. In a highly competitive market, the company is well known and well respected for the honesty of advice, the accuracy of pricing and efficiency of marketing to a vast spectrum of clients in a wide variety of property related markets.
What’s your proudest moment/biggest achievement as a family business?
Information and data sharing is a key part of the commercial property market. Over 15 years, EGi has built one of the most comprehensive deals databases in the UK. A ‘deals competition’ was originally set up to encourage commercial property agents to submit their information for inclusion in the database. The competition has since grown to become a hotly contested and a highly regarded accolade amongst providers of professional property services nationwide.
For the second consecutive year (2015 and 2016), Commercial Director Paul Bettesworth has been awarded the individual title of “Devon’s Most Active Dealmaker” as the individual agent to have personally completed the most property transactions in the entire Devon market. In the equivalent overall company competition, Bettesworths were celebrated as Devon’s second most active agent, measured on the same overall transactional activity basis amongst all commercial property firms operating in the County. Regionally, Bettesworths also featured prominently in the South West results. Historically, these results were almost exclusively contested by corporate firms from the Exeter or Plymouth-based regional and national agencies.
Another significant achievement in the 74-year history came in 2013 when Bettesworths won the ‘Professional Business of The Year’ in The Western Morning News / Michelmores South West of England Property Awards. This is an award given to a company demonstrating the highest level of professional competence and service throughout the region. The breadth of the competition was as diverse as Architects, Engineers, and Developers – not just Bettesworths’ immediate sector. Bettesworths beat off tough competition from multi-office, regional and national companies to win this prestigious award.
What do you love about being a family business?
The Bettesworth family has avoided the pitfalls and dealt with the challenges of family business.
In a three-generation history, the family developed a property business which has survived the hard times and flourished in the good times because all the family members have a shared vision of how a business should be run and what are its aims and ambitions. Brothers Matt & Paul are close friends as well as business partners, so love having the dual benefit of working with the person you would choose to, as well as being family!
The brothers know that they have a fantastic resource and sounding board for the previous generation(s) – experience and wisdom that many non-family businesses are not fortunate enough to have. The growing success is something that is shared and celebrated across the entire Bettesworth family. Nurturing and developing the fourth generation may well be something to look forward to in years to come.
