Established in 1875, Bagnalls continues to be one of the country’s leading painting, decorating and specialist coatings contractors.
The company, formed over 140 years ago, by Alfred Bagnall, remains family owned and managed to this day. Originally established in Shipley, West Yorkshire, where the Head Office still resides, the company has since expanded into a national company with offices throughout the UK. We have a reputation for delivering maintenance painting contracts successfully in any location, of any size, nature or duration with the personal service that one expects from a firm now in its fifth generation.
The Group Managing Director, Stephen Bagnall is the fifth generation of the Bagnall family to have worked in the company. His father, John Bagnall, 4th generation now retired but remains the Group Chairman and attends Board meetings. Stephen’s cousin, Elspeth Jobes, is HR Manager, whose mother is John Bagnall’s sister. As well as active Bagnall family members there are a number of employees who have generations of families in the business and opportunities for the development of all our people throughout the organisation.
What’s your proudest moment/biggest achievement as a family business?
In over 140 years of trading, we have had numerous achievements to be proud of many of which embrace our strong company values. One such moment was in 2013 when Bagnalls attended the PDA – Painting & Decorating Association Annual Trophy Awards and were successful in three of the four main categories – Apprentice, Decorative and Industrial. This was a great acknowledgement of the company’s strengths by the Industry’s Trade Association. We have won individual categories many times and were the first company to be awarded the PDA Industry Excellence Award in 2005. However, being named winner three times at an event with our industry peers was a proud moment for the whole Bagnalls team and family shareholders.
What do you love about being a family business?
We admire the people who work for Bagnalls. Every individual is important in our company and this is reflected in the way Stephen Bagnall, the Group Managing Director, and other Board members engage with employees at all levels through site visits, safety meeting talks and customer support.
Not only have there been five generations of the Bagnalls family in the business but there are also generations of families throughout the company, with fathers working alongside their sons as painters and apprentices.
Our competitors look to Bagnalls to see how things should be done. Our high levels of repeat business and long-term contracts demonstrate the high levels of customer satisfaction we achieve. We treat our suppliers and subcontractors fairly, paying them on time and remaining loyal if they do a good job. Our people are our key asset and the leaders of our business tomorrow are developed through our apprenticeship programme and management trainee scheme.
